Preventing Accidents at Work

Safety management in various fields is an interest of mine. The industrial field tends to have more accidents than most other types of job sites, so I’ve spent a lot of time learning about industrial accidents. How do they happen? Why do they happen? How do they affect employees, business owners, and clients? How do they impact the overall success of an industrial business? Some of the answers to these questions can be found in this blog. I started it to share the information that I’ve been collecting with people that are in my field of interest. If you work or own a business in the industrial field, knowing how to prevent accidents at work should be important to you. The information here can help you learn how to be more proactive in preventing them.

What To Look For In A Shoring Engineer?

Henry Ellis

If you are looking to build a home, or renovate your existing home, on a slope or hill, you may be looking to hire a shoring engineer. A shoring engineer completes the shoring process. This process helps to protect both your property and the neighbors property from your home or land sliding off of the slope or hillside that the building will be placed on. Unless you build houses for a living, odds are, you have not had to hire a shoring engineer in the past. As such, you may be unsure of what you should look for when hiring one. Here are a few of the factors you want to consider when hiring a shoring engineer.

What the Long Term Results of Their Work Is

Always ask a shoring engineer what the long term results are for their work. Not every home build on a hillside will stand the test of time. If there is an earthquake or the ocean erodes the hill, the home can collapse. As such, it is not always practical to expect an engineer to have perfect results. However, if they seem to have a large number of homes that have collapsed over the years, they may be building on unstable soil or using methods that are not right for the type of soil present.

How They Determine the Soil Conditions

Another important factor to ask is how the engineer determines the soil conditions. The soil conditions play a huge role in the shoring process. In some cases, shoring nails may be used, while in others, shoring anchors may be needed. Some engineers will hire professionals to determine the quality of the soil, while others simply take a look at it and go based on their gut instinct. You want an engineer who has someone test the soil and determine the quality and type of soil.

How They Go About Getting Easements From Neighbors

Lastly, ask the engineer how they go about getting easements from neighbors. If you are using shoring nails or anchors, they often go into the ground diagonally. This may cause the anchors or nails to go over your property line and into your neighbors property. In this case, you will need an easement. Some engineers will pay the neighbors off, while others may ask nicely. Ask how the engineer you use goes about getting an easement from the neighbor and what their success rate is with that method.

Building a home into a cliff, on a slope or on a hill is always a risky proposition. No matter how much you plan and put into hiring an engineer, there is always a risk that something can go wrong and the soil can erode or slide away. However, hiring the right shoring engineer helps to decrease the likelihood of this happening during construction and renovations and well into the future. Knowing what to look for can help you find the right shoring engineer for your project. For more information, contact companies like Studio A Engineering.
